Overview

Adapx provides Capturx, a platform that automates mobile paperwork by capturing and sending handwritten data from tablets, paper forms, maps, or notebooks into leading backend systems. The product is used to streamline mobile data capture and logistics in activities such as energy field service, delivery of food aid, and health assessments for civilians and soldiers. Led by CEO Ken Schneider, the company says Capturx eliminates the costs and delays of paper handling and transcription. Adapx recently secured $3M in additional funding and reports total funding of approximately $32M. The company intends to use the new capital to accelerate development of new software solutions and to enter new markets. Adapx is based in Seattle, WA, and has added General Peter W. Chiarelli to its board of directors. Adapx develops and provides enterprise software for digital pens and related multimodal input systems. Its products let mobile teams collect data and collaborate in native file formats and systems (Microsoft Office, SharePoint, GIS, PDF, ERP and CRM) through digital pens without transcribing paper or deploying mobile computers. The company also offers a multimodal product line used by the military for command and control to enable ISR teams to input data into digital mapping and intelligence systems by sketching on paper, touchscreen devices, or by speaking as they sketch on wall displays. Adapx intends to use the newly raised funds to expand its digital pen product line and its multimodal offerings. The company is led by CEO and Chairman Ken Schneider. Adapx is based in Seattle, WA. Adapx develops Capturx, software that digitizes handwritten notes captured by Anoto digital pen-and-paper technology. The software records pen strokes with a digital camera and converts writing into formats compatible with Microsoft Office, Autodesk engineering models, and ArcGIS maps. At DEMOfall the company demonstrated mapping paper-form notes into corresponding Excel spreadsheet boxes. Adapx says it has more than 500 customers and counts NASA as a customer; it also received a strategic investment from In-Q-Tel. Use cases cited include marking up construction diagrams, field inspections of utilities, annotating maps during disasters, and adding military intelligence to maps. Financially, the company has raised $19 million to date. Adapx builds a digital pen-and-paper system called Capturx that records handwriting with a tiny camera and lets users import notes into OneNote, AutoCAD and ArcGIS. The company sells to enterprises and government agencies, with a consumer product also offered. Adapx reports about 300 customers so far, including multiple government users. CEO Ken Schneider says the firm will continue to focus on established “beachheads” and add compatibility with different kinds of forms. The product is positioned for field work where tablets may be impractical, and competes with consumer-focused LiveScribe. Financially, Adapx previously raised a $10 million first round in December and plans to raise a full second round in the last quarter of 2008. Adapx produces the Penx, a highlighter-sized digital pen that writes with ink on paper while a built-in camera and image processor store what is written. The pen uploads captured data to computers via a docking station and Adapx’s Capturx software, integrating with Microsoft OneNote, Autodesk AutoCAD and ArcGIS. The product requires special digital paper printed with imperceptible dots and Adapx sells OneNote notebook kits, proprietary ink and docking hardware. The Penx is rechargeable with a battery life of about three years and can be password-protected to prevent unauthorized downloads. Adapx is targeting military, government, utility, architectural and construction customers and has only recently started selling. The company reports pre-orders “in the hundreds.”
