AirMap provides software, an end-user app, and systems that help drone operators, manufacturers, regulators and airports manage low-altitude airspace and plan safe flights. Its platform offers geofencing, airspace-condition alerts and route guidance that accounts for rules, terrain, weather and shifting traffic. CEO and cofounder Ben Marcus, who serves as co-chair of the FAA’s Industry Unmanned Aircraft Safety Team, says AirMap aims to feed autonomous drones real-time information about safest routes. Marcus said 80% of the world’s drones are using AirMap today for geofencing and to alert operators of airspace conditions; integrations include Yuneec, DJI, Intel and AeryonLabs. The company plans to further develop its airspace and air-traffic-management systems and expand internationally, opening offices in Berlin and at NASA Ames while keeping headquarters in Santa Monica. AirMap raised $26 million in a Series B to fund product development and global expansion. AirMap offers airspace information services for drone operators to indicate when and where they can fly. Its services are already used by major consumer drone companies including 3DR and DJI. The company announced a collaboration with several of the U.S.'s largest airports to allow drone fliers to share the real-time location of their flights. AirMap plans to use new funding to accelerate development of its airspace management tools. Company leadership frames mapping as an initial step toward building navigation systems for commercial drone operations, a process it says will take a few years to become routine. The company also added three new advisory board members: Bill Ayer, Richard Deakin, and Graham Richard. AirMap is a free, comprehensive digital map that enables UAS and drone operators to visualize surrounding airspace, including areas where they may not be permitted to fly. The company is co-founded by Ben Marcus and Greg McNeal. AirMap is now building an API management tool and a software development kit to allow drone manufacturers to integrate with their unmanned aerial vehicles. The company raised $2.6M in funding to support growth. It intends to use the funds to grow its business and expand its airspace-mapping and data visualization system. AirMap is based in Santa Monica, California.
