Alkemio

Calle Rocamora 4129, Almagro, Buenos Aires, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, C1184ABD, Argentina

Overview

Alkemio develops a modular, organic separation system designed to refine rare earth elements on-site at mines, starting with dysprosium. The company says its approach eliminates toxic solvents, cuts emissions by more than 70% and can reduce capex by up to 80% versus conventional large-scale refining. Founded three years ago by biotechnologist Ailín Svagzdys, second-time founder Federico Bonnet, and rare-earth separation scientist Lorena Molina Calderon, Alkemio has signed pilots and letters of intent with mining companies across Latin America, the U.S. and Canada. The startup previously raised $400,000 from accelerators GRIDX and SkyDeck Berkeley and will use the new $2 million pre-seed to scale its lab prototype into a 100-kilogram commercial pilot in the United States. Alkemio is part of a broader cohort of companies rethinking rare earth sourcing and processing.
