AltStore
1801 N Lamar Street, Suite 150, Dallas, TX, 75202, United States
Overview
AltStore offers a third-party iOS app store, originally popularized through its video-game emulator Delta, and has grown quickly since the EU’s Digital Markets Act forced Apple to allow alternative app marketplaces. The platform now hosts more than 100 developers and serves “hundreds of thousands” of users, giving creators freedom over business models and content that would not pass Apple’s stricter policies, including adult apps. Run by co-founders Riley Testut and Shane Gill, the company plans to expand its storefront beyond Europe into Australia, Brazil and Japan later this year. AltStore is also adding a social discovery layer by launching its own Mastodon server that syndicates app updates across the fediverse, enabling users on Mastodon or Threads to follow app accounts directly. To nurture this ecosystem, the company has pledged $500,000 in donations to key open-social projects such as Mastodon gGmbH, Bridgy Fed and PeerTube. The founders, now based in New York, will use new funding to hire a team and scale operations. AltStore’s growth has been entirely product-led until now, with no previously reported outside capital.
