Overview

AppNexus operates a powerful, real-time decisioning platform that supports products for publishers to maximize yield and for marketers and agencies to harness data and machine learning to deliver customized campaigns. The company offers a full suite of advertising-technology products, including an SSP and Yieldex Analytics. AppNexus is headquartered in New York City and employs over 1,000 professionals across five continents. It recently entered a strategic partnership with News Corp that will make AppNexus' full suite available to several News Corp businesses, including Dow Jones, News UK and News Corp Australia. AppNexus also augments its existing relationship with Unruly; under that partnership buyers and sellers of outstream inventory can combine AppNexus' video buying platform with Unruly's UnrulyX SSP (70% of views delivered across comScore 500 sites). The company emphasized long-term innovation and digital expansion through strategic media partnerships. AppNexus has built a platform for buying and selling ads through real-time bidding. The company says 30 billion ad impressions are transacted on the platform each day and more than $1 billion in ad spend ran through the platform in 2013. AppNexus employs nearly 600 people. The company announced an additional $60M funding round (which could eventually reach $100M) at a $1.2B valuation. CEO Brian O'Kelley said AppNexus just saw its first profitable quarter and that recent weak public-market performance by ad-tech companies did not factor into the decision to raise capital. The new funding brings total capital invested in the company to just over $200M. AppNexus runs a real-time bidding platform that powers ad networks and programmatic advertising transactions. The company is led by co-founder and CEO Brian O’Kelley, who previously built the ad exchange platform at Right Media. AppNexus reported managing about $700 million of advertising spend in 2012 and said it nearly tripled its revenues that year. The business has grown to more than 400 employees across nine offices worldwide. The new funding was announced following what the company described as a successful year. AppNexus builds a realtime bidding platform and management tools that allow ad networks to interface with large display advertising exchanges. The service connects roughly 120 ad networks to exchanges such as Google Ad Exchange, Microsoft Media Network, Admeld, OpenX, and AdECN. The platform helps advertisers and networks optimize for metrics like cost-per-click and cost-per-impression. More than 4 billion ad impressions are served through AppNexus every day, up from zero two years prior. The company has rapidly grown headcount, increasing from about 23 employees at the start of the year to roughly 65. CEO Brian O’Kelley said the company has “gone crazy on the revenue side,” though he declined to disclose specific revenue figures. AppNexus is a New York City-based provider of a platform for buying real-time online advertising. Its core product gives buyers of online ads a proprietary gateway to leading ad exchanges and ad inventory aggregators. On October 11, 2009, the company announced it secured a $5 million equity financing. The round was led by existing investor Kodiak Venture Partners, with participation from current investors Venrock and First Round Capital. Proceeds will be used to continue expanding the business and to add top industry talent. The financing is intended to support growth of its real-time ad-buying platform.
