33 Arch St Fl 17, Boston, MA, 02110, United States

Overview

Founded in 2011, Apptopia offers a machine-learning powered platform that collects and analyzes billions of complex data points to surface competitive signals from mobile apps and connected devices. The platform is used by brands and financial firms to generate insights on consumer behavior and intent. Customers named in the article include Google, Visa, Coca-Cola, Target, Zoom, NBC, Unity Technologies, Microsoft, Adobe, Glu, Andreessen Horowitz and Facebook. The company recently launched a mobile intelligence app in the Bloomberg App Portal on the Bloomberg Terminal to enable traders and portfolio managers to access app data within Bloomberg. Leadership is shifting: founder Eliran Sapir is transitioning to chairman and former COO Jonathan Kay will become CEO. Apptopia says it will use new funding to continue to expand operations and its business reach. Apptopia evolved from an app-resale marketplace into an app intelligence platform that provides app-store stats, detailed usage metrics (daily/monthly active users, sessions, session time, retention), SDK visibility, and in-app advertising insights. Its customers include Google, Facebook, Pinterest, NBC Universal, Philips, Deloitte, Telerik, Fyber, Airpush, Chartboost, Startapp, SendGrid and over two dozen VC firms. Pricing starts at $79 per month for smaller developers and scales to over $5,000 per month for advertising and API access. After pivoting to app intelligence in June 2015, the company reported rapid MRR growth—$30K MRR within 60 days, $70K MRR within 120 days, and said it has since quadrupled that level. Boston-headquartered Apptopia has a 43-person team and plans to double headcount over the next year with a focus on sales and marketing. In January it plans to roll out version two of its platform, adding optimization tools to make its data actionable and speed decision-making. Apptopia operates a marketplace that lets developers sell mobile apps and other bits of source code and manages the entire transfer process with the appropriate app stores. The company takes a 10% transaction fee and keeps about 8% after roughly 2% in credit-card fees. Sale prices reported range from $500 to $150,000, with the highest completed sale to date at $13,000 and an average sale of $4,500 that the company expects to climb to around $6,000–$7,000 within a few months. Sales have doubled month-over-month for the past three months, moving from $25,000 to $50,000 and now on track to break $100,000 in the current month. Apptopia is preparing R&D-backed monetization initiatives, including a second monetization strategy focused on driving user activity that is in testing and slated to launch in a couple of months. To support those efforts it is hiring for UI/UX, a Director of Product, and two developer sales/evangelist roles, and plans integration with analytics provider Flurry within a week or two. Apptopia is building a marketplace to broker the sale of mobile apps, including source code and the app-store transfer process. The site connects buyers and sellers, handles the transfer with the app store, and charges a transaction fee plus a listing fee. The company has already brokered a sale valued at over $15,000 and had about 30 more deals lined up for its February launch. Apptopia expects most app sale prices to be in the $6,000–$15,000 range (with typical ranges of $5,000–$50,000). Its fee model takes 10% of the transaction price and is expected to retain roughly 8% after credit-card fees; the first 200 developers to sign up will have their listing fee waived. The founders are Jonathan Kay and Eli Sapir, who brought prior startup and product experience to the effort.
