Archimedes Pharma is a Reading, UK-based biopharma focusing on oncology, pain, neurology and critical care. It currently markets a range of products in the UK, France, Germany and Ireland and plans to expand commercial presence in Spain and the US during 2010. The company is preparing the global commercial launch of PecFent (previously NasalFent), an innovative fentanyl nasal spray for the treatment of breakthrough cancer pain; PecFent has been filed for approval in Europe and the US and was expected to be approved for commercial sale during 2010. The product is supported by an extensive phase III clinical programme that met all primary and secondary end-points, showing onset of pain relief within five minutes, statistically significant improvements versus immediate-release morphine, high patient acceptability, and consistent effectiveness. Archimedes raised £65m in new funding to establish US operations and support growth of its specialty pharma business in Europe and the global launch of PecFent. The company appointed Jeffrey H. Buchalter as President and CEO and expanded its board to include representatives from Warburg Pincus and Novo A/S.
