Area 2 Farms

Overview
Area 2 Farms is an Arlington, Virginia–based agtech company that designs, constructs, and supports a nationwide network of organic indoor farms using soil-based growing methods. Branded around the motto “move the farm, not the food,” its model places farms within roughly 10 miles of consumers to cut transport, preserve nutrients, and strengthen local economies. The company differentiates itself from many vertical-farm peers through nutrient-rich crop diversity that spans greens, herbs, root vegetables, and microgreens, while aiming for economic viability for local farmers. A pilot facility in Arlington has already produced more than 20,000 harvests for over 1,000 customers and has hosted student education programs. Recent funding brings total new capital to $9 million, which will be invested in additional farm sites, advanced technology infrastructure, and partnerships across real estate, education, and food-access initiatives. Farms are already under development in Fairfax, Virginia, and management ultimately intends to locate a farm within 10 miles of every U.S. household. Founder and CEO Oren Falkowitz emphasizes that only 16 ¢ of every food dollar currently reaches farmers and argues that hyper-local agriculture can correct this imbalance. Backers view the company as a scalable, resilient alternative to centralized food supply chains.
