Atarraya Inc

2075 S Belmont Ave, Indianapolis, IN, 46221, United States

Overview

Atarraya develops modular, urban-friendly Shrimpbox systems, including the next-generation Shrimpbox Air, to produce local, antibiotic-free shrimp in closed-loop, zero-waste facilities. The company opened a Plainfield, New Jersey facility in November 2024, backed by a $2 million contract, to serve the New York City metro area after proving unit economics at an Indiana site. Over the past year Atarraya reported quarterly sales doubling and gross margins exceeding 50 percent. Its production model has achieved a 50 percent reduction in capital expenditure per kilogram of production, a key milestone toward economic viability. New U.S. tariffs on imported shrimp and disrupted international supply chains have increased demand for locally produced, traceable seafood. Atarraya has also named chef Barton Seaver as brand ambassador to accelerate corporate dining and foodservice partnerships. Atarraya develops Shrimpbox, a modular, intermodal cargo-container system that enables vertical shrimp farming with minimal water discharge. Its three-pronged technology combines biofloc biotechnology to reduce disease and antibiotics, remote-management software for operations and training, and AI-powered automation to monitor water quality, temperature, oxygenation and feeding. The company, which has been in stealth since 2019 and is led by founder and CEO Daniel Russek, claims Shrimpbox is the "world's first" technology of its kind. Prototypes are being assembled in Guapinole, Oaxaca, and a training/demo farm is expected to open later this year in partnership with the Indiana Economic Development Corp.; Atarraya also recently established a U.S. headquarters in Indianapolis while remaining Mexico City–based. Financially, Atarraya raised $3.9 million in a Series A angel round and reports $10 million in total funding to date; it grew its Mexican business 5x between 2020 and 2021. The company plans an early adopter program in 2023 and intends to begin scaling in the second half of the year.
