Overview

Atlas develops ultra-rapid decentralized and point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests for a range of infectious diseases built around its Atlas io system. The io system uses a patent-protected electrochemical sensor technology that removes the need for costly optical components and supports multiplex detection. The platform consists of an inexpensive Reader and a disposable cartridge and is designed to deliver accurate results within 30 minutes. Atlas completed the final tranche of a £16.9m Series B and the funds will be used to complete transfer to manufacture and to file for European approval of its first Chlamydia test. Clinical trials were scheduled for 2014 with a planned rollout in Europe and the United States pending regulatory approvals. The company, established in 2005, has head office and laboratory facilities near Bath and is targeting initial launches for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, conditions for which over 50 million tests are carried out annually in Europe and the US; the worldwide infectious-disease IVD market is cited at around US$9 billion.
