Automatic combines a plug-in OBD-II adapter and a Bluetooth-connected smartphone app to collect vehicle data and offer features such as mileage, MPG, fuel expense tracking, emergency crash response, and a parked-car locator. In May the company launched a developer platform and SDK with more than 20 third-party app makers, turning Automatic into a platform for connected-car apps and integrations. Integrations include feeding mileage into Concur, splitting gas costs via Unmooch, and linking driver earnings and fuel costs with SherpaShare. The company competes with a range of connected-car services but is focused on expanding its App Gallery and developer ecosystem. Financially, Automatic announced a $24 million Series B and says it has raised $32 million in total to date. The company plans to use the new funds to grow its App Gallery, Developer Platform, overall business and to build out the team.
