Overview

Better Health is a San Francisco, CA–based provider of medical supplies and support for people with chronic conditions. Co-founded by Adam Breckler and Naama Stauber Breckler, the company serves patients with ostomy, chronic wounds, diabetes, chronic retention, and incontinence. Its solution combines a cohesive care model that incorporates peer coaching, education, and home delivery of medical supplies to drive engagement, adherence, improved outcomes, and reduced costs. The company recently raised $14M in financing following a prior $10M Series A. Better Health plans to use the funds to bring a more comprehensive solution to payers and providers and to expand into new categories to serve members with chronic conditions. Backers named in the round include Healthworx, UHealth – University of Miami Health System, Mosaic General Partnership, new investor Samsung Next, and existing investors such as Caffeinated Capital, General Catalyst, Bill Ackman’s family office Table Management, and at.inc/. Better Health offers an end-to-end chronic condition care solution that bundles peer-support, education, telehealth and home delivery of medical supplies to help members discover and purchase appropriate equipment and manage conditions at home. The company reports strong member growth (4.5x growth in the first half of 2021) and clinical outcomes from its programs: a company study found 64% of participants reduced utilization of care and 47% saw improved mental health scores. Better Health currently operates in 46 states and its services are covered by insurance for more than 81 million lives; reported insurance partners include Medicare, Medicaid, Oscar Health and Humana. The team plans to build out specialized telehealth services covered by insurance, expand its bundled supplies, education and telehealth model into new product categories and chronic conditions, and deepen partnerships with health systems and payers. The company recently closed a $10 million Series A to support those expansion plans. Better Health operates an e-commerce marketplace designed to simplify how people with chronic conditions buy home medical supplies. The company provides one-to-one advisors, peer coaches with lived experience, product education and hands-on help navigating insurance, paperwork, cost estimates and appeals. Founder Naama Stauber Breckler built the business after earlier work on CompactCath exposed systemic problems in the medical-supplies market. Better Health is Medicare-licensed in 48 states and has partnerships with commercial payers including Humana and Oscar Health. The startup estimates the U.S. home medical-supplies market at roughly $60 billion annually, underscoring the opportunity. It recently raised seed funding to pursue improving customer choice, experience and innovation in the space.
