Overview

BG Medicine is a life sciences company based in Waltham, Massachusetts focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel biomarker-based diagnostics. The company recently launched the BGM Galectin-3 test for use in patients with heart failure. It also has products in development to aid in the diagnosis and management of acute atherothrombosis and lipid disorders. To support commercialization efforts and provide additional growth capital, BG Medicine secured a $15 million multi-draw senior secured term loan facility agented by GE Capital, Healthcare Financial Services. Company management said GE Capital was a trusted source of financing and structured a loan well-suited to further product development and commercialization plans. GE Capital's Healthcare Financial Services group has provided more than $60 billion in financing over ten years across healthcare sectors. BG Medicine develops molecular diagnostic tests built on a patented biomarker discovery platform that integrates measurement and analysis of proteins and metabolites. The company’s tests are intended to predict drug response, assess toxicity risk, identify or prognose disease, and monitor disease progression or therapy response. BG Medicine has a pipeline focused on cardiovascular disease, cancer and central nervous system disorders and ongoing joint initiatives with Merck, AstraZeneca, Abbott, Takeda, Humana, Philips and the U.S. FDA. The firm applies systems biology to discover and validate biomarkers and has created multiple product candidates from those efforts. Proceeds from the recent financing are planned to accelerate commercialization and the launch of the company’s first two diagnostic products and to continue discovery and development of additional candidates.
