BIOeCON develops non-edible biomass conversion technologies and has created three proprietary processes. The company is advancing a fuel cell concept called BiCEPS, developed with Eindhoven University of Technology, to convert cellulosic biomass directly into electricity. It raised an additional €1m comprising an investment from existing shareholders plus a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs to design and build a BiCEPS prototype. The prototype will be built by a team led by BIOeCON’s business development director, Dr. Hans Heinerman. Previously BIOeCON formed a 2007 Houston-based joint venture, KiOR, to commercialize Biomass Catalytic Cracking (BCC) — funded by Khosla Ventures and now in demonstration with a plant under construction in Mississippi. In 2009 the company entered a joint development agreement with PETROBRAS to scale BiCHEM and established an international research group led by Prof. emeritus Jacob Moulijn at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven to demonstrate BiCHEM at pilot scale.
