Biogen Gwyriad

Overview

Biogen GwyriAD is a joint venture with BiogenGreenfinch focused on building and operating an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant to process food waste into electricity and digestate fertilizer. The project centers on a new 11,000 tonnes-per-annum AD facility at Llwyn Isaf, Gwynned, that will process council and third-party food waste. The plant is expected to generate and export 3,500 MWh of electricity annually — roughly enough to power about 700 households — and produce a digestate product for agricultural use. The electricity revenues will benefit from premium selling prices under the Feed-in Tariff scheme. The company’s near-term plans are enabled by a minimum 15-year food-waste supply contract with Gwynned Council (with a five-year extension option) that fixes supply at an agreed price over the contract term. Financially, the project has secured a £6 million investment from Iona Capital and is the first investment under the Welsh Government’s sponsored organic waste program.
