Breethe

1101 West Pratt ST, Baltimore, Maryland, 21223, United States

Overview

Breethe is commercializing an “out-of-hospital” wearable artificial lung developed from University of Maryland research. The device is intended to let patients who are currently hospital-bound and ventilated resume a more normal level of function and mobility. The technology was developed by Dr. Bartley Griffith, a distinguished heart and transplant surgeon, who became a startup founder to advance the work. The university’s commercialization arm announced a licensing deal to Breethe and its BioPark-based location ties the company to the University of Maryland ecosystem. Financially, Breethe closed a seed round in January; the university’s venture arm invested $100,000 as part of that round. The company is positioning the device for out-of-hospital use and further commercialization efforts based on the licensed technology.
