BrightContext is an Arlington, Va.-based provider of a real-time data stream processing platform. Its platform allows users to filter and perform calculations on streams of data in-flight and to power real-time data communication in apps. The company delivers its solutions on-demand and through an API and SDKs. BrightContext is led by CEO John Funge and Leo Scott. Financially, it recently received an equity investment from Piedmont RIA via Militello Capital; the amount was undisclosed. In September it also received funding from the CIT GAP Funds. BrightContext provides a cloud platform that combines real-time data-stream processing (QuantChannels) with real-time data transmission and broadcast (ThruChannels) to help developers build interactive, live applications. The company positions itself as a Twilio-like provider for real-time data streams, aiming to simplify infrastructure and spike-y traffic handling for developers. BrightContext demonstrated a sample ElectionMeter app that aggregates user inputs and renders live, averaged visualizations on a U.S. map, highlighting its focus on real-time visualization. The founders say the platform targets social TV initially but could also be used for business analytics, gaming, and mobile applications. BrightContext emphasizes freeing front-end developers to be creative without managing underlying infrastructure. The company was launching at TechCrunch Disrupt and is led by co-founder and CEO John Funge (co-founder Leo Scott). Financially, BrightContext has raised $1.7 million in funding from Southern Capitol Ventures and various angel investors.
