Careship

Hauptstraße 26, Berlin, 10827, Germany

Overview

Careship operates a Berlin-based online marketplace that connects families needing elderly care with qualified in-home caregivers using a matchmaking algorithm. Caregivers on the platform set their own prices while Careship handles billing, insurance coordination, and family communication. The company advises users on insurance benefits and reports a roughly 50/50 mix of state-funded and private customers under Germany’s care funding system. Its service is available in Berlin, three other major German cities, and North Rhine-Westphalia. Careship plans to use new funding to expand coverage across Germany in 2018 and has a longer-term vision to make the service available across Europe. Financially, the startup disclosed a further €6M round and had previously raised €4M in January 2017. Careship provides a platform to help families find qualified home-based caregivers, using a matchmaking algorithm to pair caregivers with care recipients and coordinating the practical and insurance aspects of care arrangements. The service also advises families on insurance benefits and manages the moving parts of in-home care. The company was founded by siblings Antonia and Nikolaus Albert after difficulties finding care for their grandmother. Careship sees a large market opportunity driven by demographic shifts in Europe and recent German healthcare reforms that unlocked €13.7bn for companionship services. German forecasts anticipate 3.4 million people in need of care by 2030, underscoring the demand Careship targets. The startup aims to digitize and simplify the market to bring prices down and improve access to home care.
