Cofertility

325 N. Larchmont Blvd #329, Los Angeles, CA, 90004, United States

Overview

Cofertility operates a ‘Split’ program that lets women freeze their eggs at no cost in exchange for donating half of the retrieved eggs to intended parents. The company matches young women who wish to preserve fertility with people seeking donor eggs and says it has hundreds of donors available at any given time. Cofertility reports that about 55% of its donors have graduate degrees and emphasizes donor diversity. Intended parents pay the egg retrieval costs and Cofertility’s coordination fee but do not have to compensate the donor, lowering out‑of‑pocket expense. Cofertility’s model aims to expand access to donor eggs and reduce stigma around egg donation; the founder has described the company as working like a marketplace. Financially, the startup recently completed a meaningful financing round and has raised a total of $16 million to date. Cofertility launched last week to make egg freezing more accessible by coupling it with egg donation. The company was founded by Lauren Makler (CEO and former founder of Uber Health), Halle Tecco (former founder of Natalist and Rock Health), and Arielle Spiegel (marketing professional). It offers two programs: Keep, where women pay to freeze and store eggs for their own later use, and Split, where women freeze eggs for free when they give half of their eggs to a family who can’t otherwise conceive. Split applicants complete a preliminary questionnaire based on American Society for Reproductive Medicine guidelines and an application collecting lifestyle, education, cultural background, family medical history and personality information. Cofertility emphasizes personalized donor profiles so intended parents can get to know donors beyond basic attributes and positions the service as more affordable than traditional donor matching. The startup’s model removes cash compensation to Split donors; intended parents pay a coordination fee and sponsor treatment, and the coordination fee includes a baby guarantee allowing as many rounds as needed until they have a baby.
