Overview

cove.tool is an Atlanta-based B2B SaaS that gives architects, engineers and contractors a way to input project and site details and receive automated recommendations to optimize daylighting, HVAC, solar and materials. Powered by machine learning, the software measures a wide range of building-performance metrics, aims to reduce construction costs and democratize data-driven design by doing in 30 minutes what once took 2–4 weeks. The company launched a beta of its software in August 2017 and today supports more than 25,000 projects and over 15,000 users across 30 countries, including firms such as HDR, AECOM, Skanska and Stora Enso. cove.tool says it offset 28.5 million tons of carbon this year and employs about 60 people; it is not yet profitable but the CEO said it could be if it stopped scaling operations. The startup plans to expand its product suite, add integrations across the architecture, engineering and construction ecosystem, and scale sales and marketing in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia and the EU. Its core competitors are consultants performing similar work manually, and the company positions itself as simplifying material selection and building simulation to enable low‑carbon, cost‑optimal choices. cove.tool develops software that automates and optimizes building-design decisions to improve energy efficiency, lower costs, and reduce embodied carbon. Its core product models energy consumption and other factors (light, glare, radiation, water, embodied carbon) and can cut a manual 150-hour analysis to about 30 minutes. The platform is used by thousands of architects, engineers, contractors and developers across 22 countries and is taught at universities including Georgia Tech, Cal Poly, University of Illinois and UNC Charlotte. Recent product updates include an occupancy tool to evaluate designs for reducing airborne disease spread. The company plans to expand global sales and marketing, build new projects and launch a marketplace of energy-efficient materials. Cove.tool has amassed a database of over 1,000 products from hundreds of vendors and aims to streamline workflows from architects to contractors. Cove.Tool offers an automated, parametric energy-modeling platform that ingests granular project inputs and outputs optimal resource combinations and visual analyses to meet building energy-efficiency requirements. The product targets architects, engineers and contractors, aiming to democratize energy modeling that traditionally required costly consultants and long turnaround times. The founding team includes former architects and energy-modeling consultants Patrick Chopson and Sandeep Ajuha, with Daniel Chopson as CTO. The company already serves several large architecture firms, including HGA, HKS and Cooper Carry, and reports customer outcomes such as a developer identifying $2 million in cost savings versus an original model. With the recent seed close, Cove.Tool plans to enhance its sales effort and continue developing additional platform features. The company frames its mission as changing decision-making in the building industry to reduce emissions “one building at a time.”
