Overview
CreativeLive provides a creative and entrepreneurial education platform led by Founder and CEO Chase Jarvis, delivering live and pre-recorded video classes taught by industry experts. The platform serves more than 10 million students who have consumed over 3 billion minutes of video. Since its 2010 launch, CreativeLive has produced more than 1,500 classes, 25,000 lessons and over 10,000 hours of HD video education. Its core product combines free real-time interaction during live classes with on-demand videos that let students learn at their own pace. The company offers content across design, photography, video, music and entrepreneurship and maintains a roster of artists, journalists, writers, thought leaders and entrepreneurs as instructors. CreativeLive plans to use new funding to grow its consumer business, accelerate innovation around its live and on-demand video platform, and scale a new enterprise offering. CreativeLive offers live, video-based courses for creative entrepreneurs, with a library of over 500 courses spanning photography, business, design, software, audio, music, lifestyle and crafts. The platform has attracted more than 2 million students who have consumed over one billion minutes of content. Its core product is free live broadcasts with a "buy if you miss it" model for recorded access. Since early 2010 the company has scaled production, building state-of-the-art studios and growing headcount from eight to about 80 employees. Revenue figures were not disclosed, but the company has raised capital to fund expansion of people, technology and content. Planned work includes upgrading the front-end video player, back-end support systems, expanding engineering and data science teams, filling gaps in underdeveloped categories (notably Audio and Music), and potential future moves such as international expansion or credentialing. creativeLIVE, founded in April 2010 by Chase Jarvis and Craig Swanson and led by CEO Mika Salmi, is a Seattle- and San Francisco-based live broadcast platform connecting learners with influential experts via a social video platform. Its core product is live, instructor-led video programming across channels including photography, film, design, business and software training. The company says additional channels are in development. creativeLIVE raised additional funding and closed an $8M round with backers including Creative Artists Agency (CAA), William Morris Endeavor (WME), CrunchFund and Google Ventures, among others. These investors joined Greylock Partners, which had led a $7.5M round in October 2012. Following the financing, Caterina Fake joined the company's board as an independent director. CreativeLIVE is a Seattle-based platform launched in early 2010 by Chase Jarvis and Craig Swanson that delivers live, cable-quality HD video classes for creative entrepreneurs. The company operates its own studios in Seattle and San Francisco to produce and stream classes. Courses stream live for free, and viewers can purchase recordings priced between $29 and $149 for repeat viewing. CreativeLIVE has attracted one million students from over 200 countries and maintains a curated roster of about 60 instructors, including Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, Vincent Laforet, and Gale Tattersall. Instructors reportedly can earn in a few days what they might earn in a year elsewhere, and the company has paid “millions” to teachers. CreativeLIVE reached profitability early and has remained profitable. With the new capital it plans to expand into additional disciplines and tailor content to international users.
