Overview

Crossbar is a developer of RRAM non-volatile memory technology that the company positions as a replacement for traditional flash. Its RRAM uses CMOS-friendly materials and standard manufacturing processes and can be stacked in 3D to combine logic and memory on a single chip. The technology emphasizes low power, small size, high performance and low latency for applications from wearables and IoT devices to high-capacity SSDs for cloud data centers. It holds RRAM patents from the University of Michigan and has filed 110 unique patents, 45 of which have issued. The company emerged from stealth in August 2013 and was founded in 2010 as a Kleiner Perkins incubation in Santa Clara. Crossbar plans to use new funding to complete manufacturing and licensing operations and is finalizing agreements with several leading international semiconductor companies, with first licensing announcements expected later in the year. Crossbar develops memory storage technology based on a crossbar architecture that melds memory and logic, positioned as a possible successor to traditional non-volatile flash. The company says its approach can increase density for mobile devices and bring together reconfigurable computing and data storage functions. Crossbar notes parallels to brain-like integration of signal processing and memory, and cites nanometer-level crossbar proposals from firms such as Hewlett‑Packard and Nantero. It provides solutions for the global memory storage industry. Financially, Crossbar filed a Form D indicating intent to raise $21 million and has raised $20.5 million from undisclosed investors. The company has prior investors including Correlation Ventures, Artiman Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Northern Light Venture Capital.
