Overview

Datadog provides a monitoring service that pulls together data from diverse infrastructure and software sources into a single dashboard, allowing IT teams to see overall system health and pinpoint problems. The service can ingest information from APM tools like New Relic or AppDynamics and log-analysis tools like Splunk, consolidating them for operational monitoring. CEO Olivier Pomel stresses the company’s focus on IT needs rather than a business-centric analytics approach. Datadog counts several thousand customers, including Salesforce, Google, Zendesk, Airbnb, Samsung and even HP. The company has been tripling revenue over the last four years and more than tripled in 2015, with roughly 90% of revenue coming from the U.S. It has grown headcount from about 75 to 180 in the past year, plans to double again, maintains its engineering team in New York City and a research and development office in Paris, and intends to open sales offices across the EU and other international markets. Datadog provides a dashboard-based monitoring platform that aggregates telemetry and analytics for cloud and hybrid infrastructure and software. The service integrates with popular providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Compute Engine. Launched in 2011 with its first product in 2013, Datadog serves roughly 1,000 customers ranging from small organizations to companies monitoring tens of thousands of instances. The company aggregates large volumes of data to enable forensic investigation and plans to layer on more sophisticated analytics, including predictive analytics and anomaly detection. As new technologies like Docker and CoreOS emerge, Datadog aims to help developers and operations manage the changing environment. Datadog currently has about 75 employees and plans to triple its headcount over the next year while expanding its services and R&D. Datadog provides a SaaS-based monitoring and data analytics platform that aggregates data from servers, databases, applications, tools and services to present a unified view of cloud infrastructure. The platform enables development and operations teams to collaborate to avoid downtime, resolve performance problems and ensure development and deployment cycles finish on time. Led by co-founder and CEO Olivier Pomel, Datadog has expanded compatibility beyond Amazon Web Services to include HP Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Red Hat OpenShift and OpenStack. The company plans to use the new funding to accelerate platform development and grow its engineering division. Datadog also intends to expand its sales and marketing teams in New York and Boston. In conjunction with the round, Dev Ittycheria of OpenView will join Datadog’s board of directors. Datadog provides an integrated view of tools and services used by IT, development and operations teams, aggregating data from applications, cloud providers and specialized management tools. The product covers the full lifecycle from code change to deployment to monitoring alert, with an emphasis on a consistent data model and simple user experience. Datadog emphasizes ease of use—customers can set up in about five minutes—and the platform is built to scale, aggregating tens of billions of records a day for its largest customers. The company is privately held and venture-funded and says it serves a rapidly growing enterprise customer base. With the new financing, Datadog plans to expand development, sales and marketing operations to support that growth.
