Deepcell

Overview

Deepcell has built a platform that combines deep learning, proprietary microfluidics, high‑resolution optics and a growing cell atlas of over 1 billion images to analyze and sort single cells based on visual features. The technology isolates and collects label‑free single cells by morphology while maintaining cell viability for downstream biological characterization. By analyzing whole, unperturbed single cells rather than molecular targets, Deepcell aims to reveal cellular heterogeneity and connect morphology to multi‑omics. The company plans to continue product development, expand the team, transition to late‑stage development, and enable early commercial introduction of its platform as a service for translational research, diagnostics and therapeutic development. Financially, Deepcell closed a $73 million Series B and has raised nearly $100 million in total funding since its 2017 founding. Deepcell develops an AI-powered platform that classifies and isolates individual cells by combining deep learning, microfluidics-based cell capture, and single-cell analysis. The platform sorts cells based on detailed visual features while maintaining cell viability for downstream single-cell workflows. It can isolate virtually any cell type, including extremely rare cells occurring at frequencies as low as one in a billion, and the company is building a cell morphology atlas of more than 400 million cells. Spun out of Stanford University in 2017 by co-founder and CEO Maddison Masaeli and co-founder Euan Ashley, Deepcell aims to enable hypothesis-free approaches to cell classification and sorting. The company is based in Mountain View, California. Financially, Deepcell closed a $20M Series A round led by Bow Capital with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, 50Y, DCVC, Stanford University and angel investors including Jeff Dean. Proceeds will fund development of its microfluidics-based technology and continued expansion of its cell atlas to advance translational research and precision medicine applications.
