Overview

Docker focuses on developer-facing commercial and open-source tooling built on its popular container assets. In 2019 the company sold its enterprise business and restructured to concentrate strictly on developers. Two years after that shift, annual recurring revenue (ARR) jumped 4x to over $50 million. Headcount fell to about 70 during the restructuring and is now over 150, with plans to double in the next year; the company tracks explicit diversity KPIs at both company and manager levels. CEO Scott Johnston led the product and business-model overhaul and says most of the company’s bets have paid off. The company recently secured new funding to support scaling its product suite and hiring plans. Docker repositioned itself after selling its enterprise business in 2019 and now focuses on cloud-native containers for developers. The company promotes a free community edition to drive top-of-funnel adoption and convert a portion of users to paid customers. Docker added 1.7 million new developer registrations for the free product last year, bringing total registered users on the community edition to more than 7.3 million. CEO Scott Johnston said annual recurring revenue grew 170% last year, indicating stronger conversion to paid plans. The company has shifted to a virtual-first work model while planning an annual in-person company gathering and occasional team meetups. Docker raised new capital to support this developer-focused strategy and continued product execution. Docker is the popular containerization engine and open-source project used by developers to build and run containerized applications. The company recently sold its enterprise business to Mirantis. It has struggled to find a sustainable business model. Docker named long-time Chief Product Officer Scott Johnston as CEO, the third CEO change this year after Rob Bearden and Steve Singh. The company received a $35 million investment from existing investors Benchmark Capital and Insight Partners. Docker says it will invest in expanding cloud services to help developers discover technologies, share apps, and run applications frictionlessly on any Kubernetes endpoint, locally or in the cloud. Prior to this announcement the company had raised more than $272 million, according to Crunchbase. Docker develops containerization tooling that packages and runs containerized applications. The company announced a strategic commercial and technical partnership with MuleSoft to integrate their platforms and enable connections between containerized apps and multiple data sources. The collaboration includes technical interoperability work, a joint sales agreement, and cooperation with systems integrators and ISVs to simplify enterprise deployments. Docker leadership framed the move as a response to customer demand for API‑driven workflows, better use of legacy systems, and improved developer productivity. Financially, Docker had raised almost $273 million prior to this announcement; Salesforce is making a new investment but has not disclosed size or terms. The investment and partnership could also be a step toward a potential exit amid broader enterprise consolidation. Docker pioneered much of today’s containerized computing stack and offers a full toolchain beyond orchestration for building and managing containers. The San Francisco–based company serves enterprises migrating applications and infrastructure to cloud and hybrid models. Docker Enterprise Edition is positioned as the company’s core offering for large customers. The company reports a developer community in the millions and, per its founder’s statement, ‘‘explosive revenue growth.’’ Docker is already a unicorn valued well over $1 billion and has been transitioning toward a more enterprise-focused, revenue-generating business model. The article notes the company may use new funding to ramp sales and marketing and potentially position itself for a public offering in 2019.
