Overview

DreamBox Learning provides a K-8 digital math platform built on its Intelligent Adaptive Learning technology that dynamically adapts and differentiates in real time based on students’ answers and problem‑solving approaches. The product includes actionable reporting, content‑specific professional development for teachers, and administrative insights to track student progress. Independent studies from CEPR at Harvard and SRI show DreamBox improves student achievement on NWEA MAP Growth, and it holds an Evidence Rating of “Strong” at EvidenceForESSA.org. A recent analysis of nearly 8,000 students found that completing five DreamBox lessons per week produced double the growth of peers on the Renaissance Star assessment. The platform is used by nearly 3 million students and 120,000 teachers across all 50 U.S. states and Canada, and the company has expanded into Mexico with a Spanish‑language version. DreamBox was founded in 2006 in Bellevue, Washington, and has won multiple industry awards, including EdTech Digest and a 2018 CODiE Award. DreamBox Learning offers an Intelligent Adaptive Learning platform combined with a rigorous K-8 mathematics curriculum and a motivating learning environment available on PC and iPad. The platform captures every student decision and, per the company, up to more than 50,000 data points per student per hour to tailor millions of individualized learning paths. DreamBox reports nearly 1.5 million active student users, more than 75,000 K-8 teachers, and delivering over 1 million math lessons daily, and it delivered more than 150 million math lessons in the 2014–15 school year. The company has consistently doubled student users year-over-year since 2011 and is in use in all 50 states and throughout Canada. Future plans described in the article include developing the next generation of the adaptive platform, accelerating product innovations to enrich the educator experience with real-time performance insights, expanding content (including middle school curriculum and Spanish-language content), enhancing engagement frameworks, and adding additional reporting capabilities for districts and states. DreamBox Learning provides an Intelligent Adaptive Learning platform that delivers personalized, game-like PreK-5 math instruction. The product includes more than 1,300 adaptive lessons and virtual manipulatives aligned with Common Core. DreamBox serves over 2 million lessons per week across all 50 U.S. states and Canada and processes over one billion student data points per day. The company plans to use the funds to invest in product development — including additional grade coverage and a middle-school intervention — and to scale sales, marketing, and district-level support. DreamBox emphasizes differentiated instruction and has won more than 30 industry awards. DreamBox Learning is an adaptive e-learning platform offering more than 500 online math lessons, puzzles, games and curricula targeted at kindergarten through fifth grade. The product continuously assesses each student’s mathematical understanding and delivers personalized hints, pacing and next-activity choices. It provides teachers with detailed views of student progress, summaries for each student, concept-level descriptions and alerts for struggling students. Since fall 2010 nearly 500,000 elementary students from all 50 states have used DreamBox to view more than 11 million lessons, and an independent SRI International study found a 5.5% test-score improvement after 16 weeks of use. Launched in 2008, the company plans to use new funding to expand its curriculum, fuel product development, and grow distribution and adoption. DreamBox Learning develops adaptive online educational games that assess student learning through engaging tasks, originally launching a math program for kindergarten through grade 2 and later extending to grade 3. Its learning engine adjusts difficulty based on a child’s progress and produces progress reports for parents and teachers. The company released DreamBox Learning K-2 Math in January 2009, followed by a classroom version in April 2009 and a K-3 Math product recently. DreamBox was founded in 2006 and has raised $7.1 million from angel investors to date. The new owners plan to inject an additional $10 million to accelerate expansion into U.S. schools and to develop new content across a variety of disciplines. Reed Hastings will serve as chairman, and two new board members are Kevin Hall and John Danner.
