Overview

Earthmover has built a data infrastructure platform designed to handle massive, complex geospatial and weather data sets—tens to hundreds of terabytes per customer—using an array-oriented data structure that runs across Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft Azure and on-premise servers. Originally focused on longer-term climate data, the company pivoted to higher-frequency weather and hazard applications to meet customer urgency and unlock recurring revenue. Its stack leverages open-source projects such as Xarray, Pangeo and Icechunk, giving enterprise users confidence that their data remains portable even if the startup changes course. Earthmover layers visual dashboards and analytical tools on top of this storage foundation so non-technical teams, like trading desks or insurance analysts, can quickly extract insights without running code. The platform has attracted more than 10 paying customers, including wildfire-risk assessor Kettle and energy giant RWE, who use it for applications ranging from wildfire modeling to renewable-power forecasting. Co-founders Ryan Abernathey (CEO) and Joe Hamman (CTO) both maintain deep ties to the open-source community and continue to extend the product with new tooling funded by the company’s recent seed raise. While revenue figures were not disclosed, the fresh capital supports expansion of feature sets aimed at broadening adoption across weather-sensitive industries.
