Eight19 develops and manufactures high-performance, lower-cost plastic solar cells (organic photovoltaics) using roll-to-roll flexible processes. The company spun out from the Carbon Trust’s Cambridge University–TTP Advanced Photovoltaic Research Accelerator and was created in partnership with Professor Sir Richard Friend, Professor Henning Sirringhaus, Professor Neil Greenham and technology development company TTP. Its core product focus is on semiconducting plastics fabricated on flexible materials to enable low-temperature, high-throughput manufacturing. Eight19 pursues a design-for-manufacture strategy that combines specific product performance characteristics with low cost of energy. The company highlights advantages of organic solar cells including reduced material supply constraints and lower toxicity compared with other thin-film platforms, plus potential ease of installation and simplified manufacturing integration. It will use the recently raised capital to develop product prototypes and will continue active engagement with the Cavendish Laboratory and its research output.
