Elea & Lili

Helsinki, Finland

Overview

Elea & Lili originated from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and holds a patent family built on over a decade of VTT biomaterials research. Its core product, Cellulose Super Absorbent (CSA™), is a cellulose-based, biodegradable, microplastic-free alternative to fossil-based superabsorbent polymers, designed to be compatible with existing diaper production lines and to match SAP performance. The company is targeting two primary markets: disposable diapers and agricultural water-retention products, citing regulatory and consumer pressure and an EU restriction from 2028 on persistent plastic components in soil. CSA™ has undergone safety and skin compatibility testing according to relevant ISO standards. Elea & Lili plans pilot-to-industrial scale-up through partnerships with leading cellulose and biomaterials companies and aims for initial commercial launches in the U.S. and Europe.
