Emvolon is building a platform to convert wasted natural gas at oil well flare sites into usable chemicals like methanol, and to apply the same device to biomass and biogas feedstocks. The company engineers a reactor built from inexpensive, mass-produced automotive components to enable small, distributed chemical plants rather than large centralized refineries. Emvolon says its platform can negate roughly 90% of the CO2 emissions from natural gas flaring and sell products into large global chemical markets. The founders, Emmanuel Kasseris and Leslie Bromberg, position the technology for applications including distributed ammonia manufacturing and chemical energy storage for communities without reliable grid connections. Launched out of MIT and announced from Boston, the company plans to expand engineering and business development staff and create a dedicated laboratory space. It raised seed capital to advance development and scale its technology toward a lower-carbon future.
