Energicity

Washington, DC, United States

Overview

Energicity develops renewable energy microgrids for off-grid communities and handles site identification, project development, installation and ongoing operations. The company combines off-the-shelf solar panels with its own smart meters and a proprietary software stack for monitoring and management. To date Energicity has installed 800 kilowatts of capacity and expects to reach 1.5 megawatts by year-end, serving 36 communities and 23,000 people through subsidiaries in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Through Black Star Energy (Ghana) and Power Leone (Sierra Leone) it holds a 20-year concession in Sierra Leone to serve 100,000 people and reports the largest private minigrid footprint in Ghana. Customers pay a service fee plus a fixed per-kilowatt-hour price that typically amounts to under $2 per month for home electrification and cell-phone charging. The company is targeting deployments that could reach 1 million people in the next five years and plans to expand beyond government-awarded development bids into direct sales and organic growth.
