Overview
Epic develops Unreal Engine, a sprawling multi-tool development environment that integrates graphics, audio, lighting, animation and other systems for games and 3D content. Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) introduces a universal lighting engine, dynamic level-of-detail scaling, built-in animation and audio systems, and tools like MetaHuman for creating highly realistic characters. These features reduce the need to move assets between specialist tools and aim to enable new "next‑gen" game experiences with fully dynamic lighting, richer interactions and more complex environments. UE5 is positioned beyond games as well—targeting virtual production for film and TV, VR/AR experiences, apps, retail and simulation use cases. Epic operates a freemium licensing model where developers pay royalties only after the first $1M in revenue, and Fortnite remains a major cash cow that helps subsidize the company’s broader efforts. Following UE5’s public release, Epic received a $2 billion investment from Sony and the Lego family and maintains close ties with partners such as Nvidia to drive engine adoption.
