Epicurator
Fayetteville, Arkansas, United States
Overview
Epicurator is an iPhone app that lets users review food on a dish-by-dish basis, aggregating those ratings into average restaurant scores. Users post dish photos (displayed as thumbnails) and rate dishes on a five-star scale from “Blech” to “Foodgasm,” with a simple text explanation. The app emphasizes social features: a reviewer leaderboard, the ability to filter reviews by friends, links to Facebook and Instagram, and search by food type and location. Co-founders Buzzy Sklar and Jonathan Smyth say the product is designed to combine popular features of existing services while emphasizing social networking. The company is working on monetization via targeted restaurant advertising charged per impression, and app managers cannot edit or filter reviews. Epicurator is available for free download at the Mac App Store, with an Android version in progress, and has received $300,000 in funding from Bright Ahead.
