Overview
Epirium is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical developing therapeutics that optimize tissue bioenergetics and structure via a novel mechanism discovered by the company. It has an IP-protected platform of small molecules designed to stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis and promote tissue regeneration by a previously unknown hormonal pathway. Epirium plans to advance its first clinical candidate next year, initially in Becker muscular dystrophy and subsequently in other progressive neuromuscular disorders associated with mitochondrial depletion. The company and collaborators have conducted proof-of-concept clinical studies in Becker and Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Friedreich’s ataxia, which provided insights into mechanism, potential clinical benefit, and a strong safety profile. The platform is also being considered for diseases of aging and other conditions marked by mitochondrial loss. Epirium is led by CEO Russell Cox with CSO George Schreiner and CTO Sundeep Dugar; Paul Berns will serve as chairman, and the company was formerly Cardero Therapeutics.
