Overview

EpiWatch develops prescription software—an app that monitors smartwatch wearers for epileptic seizures and alerts caregivers. The app also logs post-seizure data to train an algorithm intended to predict future episodes. Its innovation is enabling seizure monitoring on mainstream devices like the Apple Watch rather than a separate medical wearable. The company spun out of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Technology Innovation Center, and is led by CEO Dean Papadopoulos. EpiWatch completed a $415,000 raise to fund a clinical study designed to provide FDA evidence that its software can track seizures and coordinate lifesaving care. Papadopoulos expects the study to conclude by year-end and for the app to reach market next year if the FDA approves it; the company notes the app would initially be available only through Apple Watches. The firm may require additional trials to implement on other smartwatch platforms depending on FDA requirements.
