Overview

EQAL is a production and technology company founded in 2008 by Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried. The firm develops production and software offerings (see its Umbrella product pages) and provides technology and business services to power online brands for celebrities, content owners and creators. EQAL manages communities for clients including Paula Deen, Alicia Silverstone, Top Chef winners Michael and Bryan Voltaggio, and CSI creator Anthony Zuiker. The company is based in Los Angeles and combines content production with platform and community management. According to a TechCrunch report, the creators filed an SEC form indicating an intent to raise $3.5 million to support the business. EQAL previously raised $5 million in 2008 from backers such as Spark Capital, Ron Conway, Marc Andreessen, Georges Harik, Scott Banister, Cyan Banister, Conrad Riggs and Michael Parekh. EQAL produces web video series and creates online community experiences; it is known for hits Loneygirl15 and Kate Modern. Founders and producers Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried released a trailer for Harper’s Globe, an online companion series produced in partnership with CBS. Harper’s Globe is designed to accompany CBS’s Harper’s Island (which debuts in April) and to build buzz for the TV show. The Harper’s Globe website includes an original web-video side story, a forum, a social network to interact with the cast, and news from the island’s fictional newspaper run by editor-in-chief Sparky Mackle. The video series stars one of Sparky’s terrified female reporters, and the season’s plot reportedly culminates with everyone dead by the end, one murder per episode. Financially, the company raised $5 million in April 2008.
