eSpark Learning builds a mobile education platform that curates more than 3,000 iOS apps and other learning experiences into custom playlists for K-8 students using a mix of human curation and data science. Students log in via an iPad app and receive individualized playlists; teachers on staff (12 curators) help guide content selection and product decisions. The company says it has evaluated "tens of thousands" of educational iOS apps and is focused on giving app developers access to K-8 classrooms. eSpark is live in 70 schools across 12 states and charges districts beginning at $54 per student per year. The company reports student learning growth of two to five times the typical pace, measured via third-party assessments like NWEA MAP. Recent hires include Luke Shepard, a five-year Facebook veteran, as CTO. eSpark plans to use new funding to expand its team of teacher and expert curators and to redesign and enhance its user interface.
