Overview
Evie Networks is rolling out an ultra-fast battery electric vehicle charging network featuring 350 kW chargers along Australia’s highways. ARENA announced $15 million in funding to support the first phase of the $50.2 million intercity highway charging network. The first phase will install 42 renewable-energy-powered roadside sites connecting Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane, plus destination charging in Far North Queensland, Tasmania and Perth. Each site will have two charging bays, use Tritium chargers to enable typical EVs to gain 100 kilometres of range in about 15 minutes, and will be open access with plugs suitable for all EV models including Tesla with an adaptor. Construction has commenced on the first site north of Brisbane and 23 sites are expected to be operational in the first year. Evie’s CEO estimates Australia needs around 350 sites to cover the National Land Transport Network and described the rollout as the beginning of a larger infrastructure build-out.
