Expanse

425 Market Street, San Francisco, California, 94105, United States

Overview

Expanse offers a SaaS platform that discovers, indexes and monitors what it calls customers' “global internet attack surface,” starting from large-scale IP-address indexing. The company began by mapping global IPs to help customers find exposed devices and other security risks. Its customer base includes large enterprises such as CVS and PayPal and numerous U.S. federal agencies. Expanse reports tripling sales year-over-year, quadrupling contract terms, and has more than ten customers with $1M-plus contracts; federal work accounts for over $100M in contracts. Formerly Qadium, the six-year-old company has about 150 employees across offices in San Francisco, Washington, DC, New York and Atlanta. Management plans to expand into additional international markets beyond the U.K., Canada, Australia and Japan and is pursuing adjacent offerings such as supplier risk analysis, while saying it is not selling aggregated data today. Qadium builds an automated global internet intelligence platform that indexes every device on the public Internet (hourly) and monitors organizations’ true network boundaries beyond traditional firewalls. The company crawls web content as well as streaming audio, streaming video and machine-to-machine traffic, and leases data-center capacity in multiple geographies to achieve comprehensive, real-time coverage. Customers receive yearlong and multi-year subscriptions, push alerts, and access to a web product called Expander with historical network data back to 2014. Qadium’s customer list includes large enterprises such as CVS, PayPal, Capital One, and Allergan, and the U.S. government (including the U.S. Navy) represents a meaningful portion of revenue. Subscriptions start at about $250,000 per year and can exceed $1 million annually, and the company cites examples where customers recouped subscription costs by avoiding incidents such as WannaCry. Qadium has a roughly 60-person team and plans to hire more salespeople to accelerate growth. Qadium built a platform to index every device on the public internet and to identify relationships between those devices, delivering results via a product called Expander and associated professional services. The platform functions by sending signals across public IP space, interpreting returned data to determine what devices are running where, and building network graphs to understand relationships at internet scale. Qadium routinely sees hundreds of millions of devices when it conducts sensing and has seen many billions since it began gathering data. Customers include Fortune 500 companies across financial services, insurance, healthcare, defense, auditing and retail, and the company has begun operational transitions to military services such as US Cyber Command. The company originated from DARPA work, won over $10 million in multi‑year DoD contracts to develop its prototypes, and recruits engineers and researchers from top algorithm groups. Qadium says it will use new funding to scale its core business and improve its global sensing to increase the rate at which customers receive alerts to relevant changes.
