Explo

Overview
Explo provides a tool for building customizable business intelligence dashboards that can be embedded in websites or emails and styled to match a customer's product. The platform connects directly to customer databases and data warehouses such as Postgres and Snowflake to surface and share data. Explo's leadership describes the product as sticky and positioned as a necessity for companies that prefer to outsource dashboarding rather than own it as a core competency. The company launched a self-service product with a two-week trial and reports 45 paying customers with many more trialing the product. At the time of reporting Explo had 15 employees and plans to double headcount over the next year, letting performance guide hiring. The startup previously raised a $2.3M seed and recently closed a $12M Series A to fund growth and hiring. Explo builds embeddable, customer-facing BI dashboards and tools for embedding and customizing dashboards to feel like part of a customer’s product. The company pivoted in September from an initial focus on simplifying data preparation for models to prioritizing dashboard creation after customer interviews. Explo leveraged core infrastructure, data engineering and production work developed while in Y Combinator Winter 2020 to accelerate the new product. The founding team of four—CEO Gary Lin, COO Andrew Chen, CTO Rohan Varma and product designer Carly Stanisic—remains the core group. Explo plans to use the $2.3M seed to expand its engineering team by three to five hires and to onboard its first half-dozen customers. The company intends to operate as a remote, distributed company and is thinking about how to build culture and onboarding for distributed employees.
