Exum Instruments
747 Sheridan Blvd, Unit 9A, Denver, CO, 80214, United States
Overview
Exum Instruments develops the Massbox, the first Laser Ablation Laser Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (LALI-TOF-MS) marketed as a mobile, desktop-sized instrument delivering lab-quality analysis outside traditional labs. The Massbox performs quasi‑non‑destructive analyses, produces results in hours rather than days, and yields 35–60% lower operating costs compared with traditional methods. Exum positions the product for energy applications (mining, oil & gas, batteries, nuclear) as well as environmental science, food & beverage, and academia. The Massbox has been deployed with advanced manufacturing firms including Elementum 3D and LIFT and at DOE national labs such as Los Alamos and SLAC, where it is used in battery research. To meet growing demand, Exum plans to expand manufacturing capacity in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company raised external capital in a Series A to fund that expansion and scale production. Exum Instruments is a Denver, CO-based developer of scientific instruments and accompanying software ecosystems aimed at increasing the speed and breadth of materials development and discovery. Its first instrument, the Massbox, is a Laser Ablation Laser Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (LALI-TOF-MS) designed to analyze a wide range of samples precisely and rapidly. The company launched the Massbox and is now taking commercial orders for domestic deployment. Led by CEO and CTO Jeff Williams and CDO Josh Ulla, Exum was incorporated five years ago. The company raised $1.8M in funding and intends to use the proceeds to accelerate growth and expand its business reach. Backers on the round include Cortado Ventures, Alchemy Capital, Amerocap, Oasis Capital and FortySix Venture Capital.
