Overview
Factal monitors breaking news using a blend of artificial intelligence and experienced journalists to identify and verify events ranging from severe weather to mass shootings. It sends proximity-mapped, customized alerts and provides real-time collaboration features for corporate clients across physical security, global risk intelligence, continuity of operations, emergency management, supply chain management, and executive protection. The company also offers free, unlimited access to more than 80 non-governmental organizations that provide disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and human rights assistance. Factal has more than doubled revenue and client count over the last year and is profitable and cash-flow positive. The startup has grown to 28 employees and opened a London office to provide around-the-clock coverage. For 2021 and beyond, Factal plans to develop easier-to-use desktop and mobile tools aimed at companies beyond the Fortune 500 that do not have dedicated security teams. Factal was founded by members of the former Breaking News team to provide real-time, verified incident alerts and geo-located news specifically for corporate users. The service combines human editors with machine-learning “signal detection” that ingests social media and news outlets to verify and geo-locate incidents ranging from wildfires to shootings. The product targets corporate customers who can set custom notifications based on facility and asset locations; more than 30 Fortune 500 companies participated in its beta. Factal plans to launch its paid subscription service in September after more than a year of beta testing and did not disclose pricing. With fresh funding the company intends to hire more editors around the world and explore potential consumer and platform uses of its technology. The team emphasizes speed and verification to help organizations protect employees and assets in a media environment prone to misinformation.
