Familiar provides a private photo-sharing service that displays friends' and families' photos on idle screens as screensavers and on devices including Macs, PCs, iOS, Android and the Kindle Fire. The service can pull from Facebook, Picasa, SmugMug and Flickr and supports photo-sharing via email. Familiar launched into beta in November 2011 and targets less technical, “second wave” adopters who previously used digital picture frames. The company reported a milestone of 21 million photos shared in a single month (August). Familiar is a Seattle-based team of five and plans to add a few more engineers over the next six months. The recent seed funding will be used to accelerate product development, including AirPlay support on iOS, a desktop “save” function and support for shared videos.
