Fancy

96 Spring St, 5th Floor, New York, NY, 10012, United States

Overview

Fancy is a New York–based social commerce platform that offers tools for merchants and publishers to embed Fancy streams as well as a consumer app. The company has been building out its social commerce business quietly, including at least one acquisition and early integrations with Twitter’s buy button and Apple Pay. Its Android app has between 5 million and 10 million downloads. Fancy raised around $20 million in a Series D strategic investment led by Carlos Slim Domit and Japan’s CCC; the company also thanked Arturo Elias and existing investors including Kering, General Catalyst, American Express, Jim Pallotta, Maynard Webb and Acadia Woods Partners plus other unnamed investors. Fancy said it will use the funding to continue building its technology platform and execute new strategic partnerships, which will likely include more activity in Latin America and Japan. Fancy’s holding company, Thing Daemon, had not posted an SEC filing about the round; prior to this the company had raised just over $104 million from investors such as Will Smith, Len Blavatnik, Bob Pittman and Jack Dorsey. Thing Daemon operates Fancy.com, a social-commerce site that lets users discover, collect, and buy from a crowd-curated catalog of goods, places and stores. Fancy positions itself as a platform built around a global community of curators and exceptional taste. The site emphasizes discovery and curated commerce across an assortment of cool and innovative products. According to SEC filings, Thing Daemon has raised $33 million in funding. Investors in the raise include hedge-fund manager Richard C. Perry, who owns a controlling stake in Barneys New York. The article does not include operating metrics, valuation, or details on use of proceeds. Fancy is a shoppable social‑commerce platform that lets users buy products shown in images. It enabled direct shopping from images in February and also operates a sample‑subscription business, selling “Fancy Boxes” and having acquired Samplrs. Last month Fancy began shipping worldwide after demand from non‑US users, who account for just under half of its user base. The company reports about $100,000 per day in sales, nearly 8 million registered users and over 12 million unique visitors across all platforms in the last month. A July 3 SEC filing and Bloomberg reporting disclosed a $53 million funding round that values the company at $600 million. The filing and reporting name investors including American Express, Len Blavatnik and Will Smith, and list AmEx President Edward Gilligan, Jack Dorsey, François‑Henri Pinault and Chris Hughes. COO Michael Silverman declined to comment on how the investment will be used, though TechCrunch suggested it could support the international expansion. Fancy operates a commerce marketplace where merchants and brands use a self-serve platform to upload images and deals and users can buy items directly on Fancy rather than clicking through to external sites. The service is often described as a high-end Pinterest rival but is more transactional, integrating with fashion brands and merchants to drive purchases. The company has experimented with group gift features, a subscription “Fancy Box,” buy buttons for fashion bloggers, and a cashback promotion with American Express. According to a new SEC filing Fancy has raised just over $26 million in additional funding. The filing lists co-founders Joe and Jack Einhorn and names investors including LeRoy Kim, Jim Pallotta, Jack Dorsey, Franscois-Henri Pinault and Edward Gilligan. Fancy had previously raised about $18 million in outside funding, including a $10 million round in November 2011 led by PPR and a $6 million Series A in 2010. The company is based in NYC and was reportedly in acquisition talks with Apple in August, though no deal has been confirmed.
