Fermyon develops Spin, an open-source developer tool, and Fermyon Cloud, a managed platform for building, deploying and operating WebAssembly cloud applications. The platform lets developers deploy apps written in Rust, .NET, Go and JavaScript and offers a free tier that hosts up to five web apps or microservices. Fermyon emphasizes WebAssembly’s faster startup times, cross‑OS and cross‑architecture compatibility, and security benefits compared with containers. The company operates with employees across Europe, Asia, Australia and North America and is Colorado-based. Management plans to expand Fermyon Cloud into an enterprise-ready commercial offering in the coming months and to double its 20-person headcount by mid-2023, focusing on product, marketing, developer relations and community. Leadership declined to disclose revenue but said the new financing provides funds to last several years. Fermyon offers a platform that uses WebAssembly to provide a serverless-like experience for microservices, prioritizing security, speed, and resource efficiency. The company released Spin, an open-source WebAssembly framework for individual developers, which earned 1,000 GitHub stars within six weeks. Fermyon’s platform aims to reduce Kubernetes complexity by providing a simpler programming environment and near-instant startup of modules. The founders—who previously worked at Microsoft—left last year to build the product, and Matt Butcher is a co-founder and CEO. The startup launched at the end of last year with 10 engineers and plans to hire 15 people this year. Fermyon intends to grow an open-source community first and then develop commercial offerings.
