Overview
Founded in 2022, FibreConnect provides wholesale fiber-optic connectivity to small and medium-sized enterprises situated in Italy’s underserved Industrial and Artisanal Areas (AIA). Its open-access model partners with territory-based internet service providers (ISPs), sharing revenues while allowing ISPs to deliver last-mile services. Construction of the company’s infrastructure began in 2023, and completion is targeted for 2027, ultimately interconnecting hundreds of AIAs with national Internet Exchange Points and data centers. To date, the network has already reached more than 40,000 businesses across 85 AIAs and activated a 4,000-kilometer long-haul backbone linking 20 Points of Presence. FibreConnect positions itself as filling the gap left by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which largely overlooks industrial parks despite their low (<20%) fiber coverage. Its demand-driven financing approach deploys capital only when commercial uptake is confirmed, aiming to ensure efficient capital use and quicker digital transformation for Italy’s manufacturing base.
