Overview
Fingerprint provides a device intelligence API that identifies devices across browsers and mobile apps to help prevent account takeover and payment fraud. It analyzes signals from installed fonts and screen resolution to SSL handshake characteristics, and is built on the open source Fingerprint.js library created by co-founder and CTO Valentin Vasilyev. Co-founder and CEO Dan Pinto says the platform addresses the shortcomings of cookies and IP-based tracking and is delivered via an API for high-scale businesses. The company still supports the open source libraries but offers a more private, more robust pro product. Fingerprint says it does not collect personal information and issues anonymous device identifiers to help customers remain compliant with privacy rules like GDPR. The Chicago-based company has grown to 100 employees and 6,000 customers, including TD Ameritrade, Western Union and US Bank, and is looking to expand its device intelligence platform following the new funding. FingerprintJS offers an open-source browser fingerprinting library and a commercial FingerprintJS Pro cloud SaaS that increases identification accuracy with additional client- and server-side techniques and machine learning. The open-source library has been downloaded over 14 million times and the technology is used by roughly 12% of the top 500 websites by traffic, including eBay, Coinbase, Agoda, and Yahoo!. Over the past year the company has posted 300%+ growth in annual recurring revenue. FingerprintJS’s core product helps developers build fraud-detection systems capable of identifying fraudsters even when they attempt to conceal their identity. The company plans to use new funding to accelerate development of additional developer tools, including a JavaScript bot detection API (the open-source client is available on GitHub), and to continue developing its Account Sharing Prevention product. Dan Pinto is co-founder and CEO. FingerprintJS was launched in January to commercialize an open-source browser fingerprinting project started by Valentin Vasilyev. The company offers a toolkit that provides browser fingerprinting as a service, using canvas fingerprinting, audio sampling, WebGL fingerprinting, font detection and browser plugin probing to generate a unique, de-identified browser identifier without using cookies. The open-source project has about 5 million downloads, is used on roughly 8,000 websites and the company reports hundreds of paying customers. Founders Valentin Vasilyev and Dan Pinto — who previously worked together at Pinto’s startup Machinio — are focusing on selling to developers first with a product-led, bottom-up distribution approach. The company positions its identifier as a way for customers to store and track device behavior to combat fraud. FingerprintJS raised financing to support commercialization but notes regulatory headwinds such as the EU’s GDPR and browser limits on tracking technologies; the team says it remains undeterred.
