Overview
Firebase is a Y Combinator–backed startup that provides backend infrastructure and real-time data synchronization for web and mobile applications. Its platform lets developers write only front-end code while Firebase handles the backend, enabling rapid app development without managing servers or server-side code. In recent months Firebase opened its platform to all developers, released an iOS SDK, and launched Firepad, a real-time collaborative text editor module. The company plans to use new funding to improve support for the Firebase community, expand the team, and launch a paid product. The paid product will charge based on bandwidth, storage, and number of users. Firebase raised a $5.6 million Series A and previously completed a $1.1 million seed round led by Flybridge Capital Partners. Firebase began as Envolve, a real-time chat service and pivoted during its Y Combinator run to build infrastructure for developers creating real-time web (and eventually mobile) applications. Its core product is a backend real-time data service that allows developers to avoid building and maintaining their own servers. The company reported 7,000 developer signups in the month after announcing its beta. Firebase is prioritizing security and permission features as its next major product work. Financially, it announced a $1.1 million funding round led by Flybridge Capital Partners and, combined with an unannounced round last year, has raised $1.4 million to date. The team includes co-founder James Tamplin and several notable individual investors participated in the round.
