Overview
FirstVet operates an app that serves as the initial point of contact for pet owners seeking veterinary advice, referrals, and prescriptions. The platform connects pet parents to registered veterinarians and, in select markets, integrates with pet shops and pharmacies to enable purchase of vet-recommended products and medications. FirstVet has partnerships with more than 60 major insurance companies globally, including Nationwide in the U.S., providing its service at no additional cost to over 5 million insured pets. The platform currently supports 400 veterinarians and nurses. The company plans to accelerate product development and explore new partnership types as it scales its services, particularly into North America. This funding is intended to support that expansion and speed up product work. FirstVet operates a mobile app (iOS and Android) that enables pet owners to arrange on-demand video consultations with registered veterinarians for cats, dogs, rabbits, reptiles, birds, hamsters and horses. Vets on the platform offer advice on symptoms and treatments and can refer users to local veterinary clinics; users can often meet with vets within 30 minutes. The service is offered across the Nordics, the United Kingdom and Germany and is delivered by a team of 55 staff and 250 veterinarians. Through partnerships with more than 40 insurance companies across Europe, the platform is available to over 7 million pets. Led by CEO David Prien, the company plans to use its new funding to launch in the United States, where it already has an operational team of 14 staff. Since being founded in 2016, FirstVet has raised a total of $65M. FirstVet offers on-demand video consultations connecting pet owners with registered veterinarians. The service operates in five markets (Sweden, the U.K., Norway, Denmark and Finland) and has more than 200,000 registered users and about 150 veterinarians on the platform. The company partners with over 20 major insurance companies to distribute its service, including Bought By Many in the U.K. FirstVet says it is a supplement to physical clinics rather than a substitute, handling common issues like gastrointestinal problems, wounds and skin/ear conditions. The new funding will be used to expand internationally (the U.S., Germany and France are named) and to continue product development. Planned product improvements include new automation tools and integrations with clinics’ existing systems to improve the experience for pet owners and vets. FirstVet is a Sweden‑based telehealth service for pets that provides remote video and chat consultations to help owners determine if a physical vet visit is necessary. The startup launched in 2016 and is led by CEO and co‑founder David Prien. It claims around 60,000 registered users in Sweden and answered close to 4,500 calls in June after slightly over a year on market, with business growing roughly 25% month‑over‑month. The service is positioned as a supplement to physical clinics and is priced at about 30–40% of the starting fee for a physical vet visit. FirstVet routes growth through partnerships with insurers, collaborating with all eight active insurance companies in Sweden and launching deals with three Finnish insurers. The company plans expansion across the Nordics (Norway and Denmark coming soon) and aims to enter at least one central European market during 2018; it is also developing DIY home tests for remote diagnostics.
