Flatchat is a mobile app that lets users sign in with Facebook, create simple profiles, filter potential roommates by area and price, and communicate via the app’s built-in messaging. The startup says it has amassed about 50,000 users since launching six months ago and recorded roughly 350,000 messages exchanged through its Android and iOS apps in May. It currently has about 40 employees. Founders Gaurav Munjal and Hemesh Singh position the product as a faster, broker-free way to find roommates and housing. Flatchat plans to use new funding to hire additional product and engineering staff and expand into cities with high concentrations of students and single professionals. Through its partnership with CommonFloor, the company will also gain access to listing data to help pinpoint which cities to target next.
